Blaugrana Blitz: Training, Lionel Messi joins forces with UNICEF, Gerard Pique overdose & much more

Training resumed to normal on Thursday after snow messed about with Pep’s schedule. Puyol & Henry trained normally with the team; and it was good to see Keita joining the session toward the end.

I dunno about you, but I just love this pic:

Our favourite defender Gerard Pique gave an interview on the official site, here are some excerpts:

About the league: “The reigning champions are always seen a favourites. We are the favourites and we accept that. It is true that Madrid strengthened well and that they only have the league to focus on now. They will be difficult opponents but I am confident that we will regain the title.”

About the current Barca squad: “This team has so much character. We have always shown that. Last year we showed it at Chelsea, against Mallorca and when the team appears to be in a complicated situation we always find a way to come through it. We have always come out on top. I hope that we can maintain this attitude and this character that saw us become champions of so many competitions.”

About Lionel Messi: “Messi is very important as everyone knows. We know that when he is playing well it is much easier to score goals and to win games. Leo has to take on a lot at the moment and I think that it is good for the team. He is the best player in the world.”

Staying with Pique, we’re hearing that he will publish a book on the 8th April about his career thus-far. The proceeds of the book will go to UNICEF and the Talita Foundation. The books titled: Viatge d’anada i tornada. It will be written by Gerard himself and is reportedly 140 pages in length. The damage? €16.95.

The Cover:

Pique and Bojan Krikic will be enthusiastically following the MIC, which starts on March, 30. The Meditarrean International Cup, is a global, prestigious youth football tournament, and this year is the 10th installment of the tournament. Pique who is a past participant said: “I remember coming to play here, accompanied by my father, it was very exciting. May all the participants enjoy themselves and not think about anything else!”

Pique, always the joker, poked fun at the young Bojan saying “Bojan, you could still play in the MIC, right?”

Bojan, who did play in the tournament back in 2002, said “I learnt a lot from this tournament.”

Other famous footballers to have participated: Lio Messi, Cesc Fabregas, Lucas, Anderson & Marcelo.

Some Bad News Folks. Pep and Ibrahimovic have both lost their red card appeals, and will not feature in the crucial weekend match against Valencia. President Joan Laporta was disappointed with the outcome but maintained a dignified stance: “We have nothing more to say. We respect the decision. We appealed because we felt that we had reason to oppose the suspensions. If the committee did not feel the same way then we have to respect that.”

David Villa may miss the Barca-Valencia clash on Sunday. He retired in their Europa League match against Werder Bremen. Medical Reports indicate a sprain in his acromioclavicular (shoulder) joint.

Alexis Ruano will also miss the game, due to hamstring injury.

Lio Messi was unveiled as an official global ambassador of goodwill for UNICEF! Well, he really does have every title now 😛
Lio himself agreed with this: “It is one trophy more to be able to become an ambassador. I like to help and when I have had the chance I have done that and that’s why I’m joining Unicef.”

“Messi will work to support the most vulnerable children and to defend their rights. It is excellent news and at the same time, and excellent initiative. Leo knows all about leadership on the pitch, the value of effort and responsibility. He values the importance of teamwork. He knows that this is a shared commitment to UNICEF,” said club president Joan Laporta.

Besides Lio doing his bit for goodwill, we love his look:

Lio committed himself to the vulnerable children of the world by “doing whatever is possible to help to make improvements. I know there are children in trouble, that are sick, that can’t eat properly, that have no education… I want to collaborate and contribute my grain of sand to improving the situation.”

The presentation itself was held in Sala Paris and was organized by FC Barcelona and UNICEF. Messi had Guardiola and Xavi in the audience to support him!
