FIFA World Player 2009 Awards ceremony

Venue: Congress House in Zurich.
Hosts: Charlotte Jackson & Pedro Pinto
It was the 19TH INSTALLATION of the FIFA World Player of the Year.
The hosts mentioned that only 4 countries have provided shortlist for 3 years running: Brazil, Argentina, Spain & Portugal, a fact that I found quite interesting. The awards ceremony unfolded as:

FIFA Puskàs award (Best Goal) which was awarded to Cristaino Ronaldo for his goal against Porto iin the Champions League last season. Here’s the goal:

FIFPro world XI – best team of the year :
Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas
Defense: John Terry (5th time he’s been voted onto the FIFPro world 11), Nemaja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Dani Alves
Midfield: Steven Gerrard, Xavi, Andrès Iniesta
Forward: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres

Woman’s Player of the Year 2009: Marta ( for the 4th year in a row)

Sepp Blatter handpicked FIFA’s Presidental Award. It went to Queen Rania of Jordan.

FIFA WORLD PLAYER 2009
Nominees were invited onto the stage. And asked a few queations, they spoke about:
Ronaldo: spoke of his injury during Portugal’s qualification for the World Cup.
Iniesta: who was injured just prior to hte Champions League final, but still played despite not being 100% match fit, paid tribute to the medical staff and team mates of Barcelona.
Kakà: Spoke of his role in the Confederations Cup where he was the man of the tournament.
Messi: Always soft spoken and humble, spoke of the FIFA Club World Cup and said that this was the perfect end to his year as well as Barca’s.
Xavi: Spoke about the Spanish National Team and his expectations for 2010.

The award went to Lionel Messi (who shedded his usual awkwardness and looked extremely suave in a suit)
