Lionel Messi of Barcelona & Argentina has been crowned European Footballer of the Year by France Football magazine.
Lio is the first Argentine to win the award and he’s won it in style, by the highest ever margin. He scored a whooping 473 points out of a possible 480, leaving his competition in his dust. Second placed Cristiano Ronaldo (last years winner) managed 233 points. Meanwhile his Barcelona teammate Xavi is in 3rd place.
Messi has now been in all three places: 3rd in 2007, 2nd last year, and finally 1st this year. This is really the cherry on the top of what has been a fine season for Barcelona and Messi. Lio was an intergral part of Barcelona’s treble winning season, scoring in the Champions League Final.
He will be presented with the award on Sunday.
Messi told France Football: “Honestly, I knew that I was among the favourites because Barcelona had a fruitful year in 2009.
“But I didn’t expect to win with such a margin. The Golden Ball is very important to me. All the players who won it were great players, and some great players never won it.”
He added: “I dedicate it to my family. They were always present when I needed them and sometimes felt even stronger emotions than me.”
