Observations from Brazil vs Colombia

It was an all South American quarter final with Brazil facing Colombia. The hosts game vs Chile did not impress me at all, I felt Brazil were lucky to be in the quarter finals. But Brazil were a more well put together side within the first 15 minutes against Colombia than they have looked all tournament. They got an early start, thanks to the thigh of Thiago Silva, who netted in the first goal from a Neymar corner in just 4 minutes. The second goal came from a David Luis free kick, his second this tournament, and what a stunner it was! Colombia were thrown a lifeline with 10 minutes to play when keeper Julio Cesar brought down a goal bound James Rodriguez. James converted his penalty to bring his total tally of goals to 6. Unfortunately, thats where his goal scoring this tournament ends. Brazil managed to hold on, and are off to face Germany in the Semi final. Here’s my observations from this game.

1) Experience is vital

Colombia looked solid all tournament, but when it comes down to it, experience against the bigger teams is key. So far we’ve seen them face Japan, Greece, Ivory Coast and a Suarez-less Uruguay. But this was their first test against an experienced, established football power, and they failed. On the flip side, Brazil, who have had a slightly tougher tournament, have looked  less than convincing, but when the time came, they displayed Big Match Temperament and got the job done.

2) Its important to peak at the right time

This this key, as peaking to early can see good teams tumble out, like Colombia. Brazil may be coming good, although, they are set to face a German team that’s been looking solid.

3) Brazil’s attack (other than Neymar) is shite

Awful. Evidenced by the fact that the two goals came from defenders. Luis was the scorer against Chile as well. Fred is a disaster. Hulk tried, but he’s just not at the same pace or level of brilliance as Neymar is. Oscar had a great opening game performance but has since become one with the wall paper. I can’t imagine Brazil’s front line up against a team with a great defense.

4) For grown men, footballers can sure be whiny…

The Colombians badgered the ref for every.single.tackle. The Brazilians theatrics were none the better. Just get up, get over it and play the game!

5) David Luis may not look it, but he’s a class act!

Besides the winning goal tonight, he was seen post match consoling a devastated James Rodriguez and asking the crowd to applaud him. A good show of comradary between the two.
