Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has singled out Cristiano Ronaldo as the single most important signing that he’s made in the past decade: “He [Ronaldo] was fantastic. Just a marvellous player,” the United boss told Inside United.

“We missed out on Ronaldinho but it was the same summer we signed Ronaldo which more than softened the blow. We’d agreed a deal with Ronaldinho but all of a sudden, whatever happened with Peter Kenyon and the other agents, the deal fell apart.”

SAF also made special mention of veteran Ryan Giggs, saying that the Welshman was the man of the decade “For his unbelievable service and the high standards he continues to set.”

The Carling Cup saw a young Arsenal side get owned by Manchester City. Carlos Tevez, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Vladimir Weiss all scored in the second half to ensure City’s place in the semi final. While it was a good display of football, the managers were less than classy. Wenger complained that his Man. City Counter-part, Mark Hughes had left the technical area. And after the match, Wenger refused to shake hands with Hughes. Said Hughes: “Maybe he’s used to winning games and when he does lose sometimes he doesn’t know how to behave.”

Wenger replied: “I think I have nothing to say. I am free to shake hands with whom I want after the game.”
