Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Sweden
The Paris Saint-Germain striker enjoyed a great season in France finishing at Lique 1’s top scorer and with the domestic title in hand. Unfortunately, EURO 2012 may have been the last time we see him on an international level as Sweden failed to qualify for Brazil.
Gareth Bale – Wales
Gareth Bale may have earned his price tag by scoring in Real Madrid’s “La Decima” but he will be at home watching most of his club team mates compete on the biggest stage possible, since Wales did not qualify for the World Cup.
Alvaro Arbeloa – Spain
The Real Madrid full back was part of the successful Spanish sides of 2010 & 2012. His exclusion could be because he sustained an injury in March, but it also could be because he had a fall out with Spain’s captain Iker Casillas.
Landon Donovan – USA
It came as a bit of a shock to many USA fans when Landon Donovan didn’t make the cut to go to Brazil. He is after all the country’s and MLS’s all time leading goal scorer. He was also pivotal in their final qualifying match against Costa Rica. Maybe he was excluded because he’s too old (32 doesn’t seem that old!)
Samir Nasri – France
Nasri had a a good season with Manchester City, but his attitude didn’t impress France coach Didier Deschamps. After he was excluded, his girlfriend publicly ranted on Twitter about it, making his situation worse, I guess.
Carlos Tevez – Argentina
Tevez had an excellent debut season for Juventus with 19 league goals. He was overlooked for the World Cup due to his bad relationship with coach Alejandro Sabella who felt he was not a team player and his falling out with Lionel Messi.
Mario Gomez – Germany
Gomez’s season with Fiorentina was tainted with quite a bad left knee injury in early March. He was declared not fit enough to make Low’s German squad.
Giuseppe Rossi – Italy
Rossi missed the World Cup in 2010, a decision then coach Marcelli Lippi went on record to regret. He scores 16 goals for Fiorentina this season and he was surprisingly excluded from the final 23 traveling to Brazil by current coach Cesare Prandelli. He took to twitter to admit his surprise and clear out the misconception that he was not fit. He also wished the Italians well for their campaign.
