Yes, its true. David Villa will miss this years European Championship. The announcement came yesterday from the player himself via twitter saying: “I’ve tried, but I can’t be 100% to play the Eurocup. I called Vicente del Bosque to say him. It’s the honest thing I could do.” (Aw, Bless him)
He continued: “Thanks to all of you for your support. I will continue working to return to play as soon as possible with Barça and Spanish National Team”
The has been an outcry from Barca and Villa fans the world over, after it was reported that Del Bosque will risk playing the striker regardless of whether or not he is fully recovered. Its common knowledge that Villa was determined to be ready for the EURO after his horrific injury in the Club World Cup (just before my disappearance :P). This announcement however will put peoples minds (including mine) at ease. And as much as I yearned to see el Guaje work his magic in Poland-Ukraine, I really do applaude his courage for coming forward and recognising he is not ready, despite how disappointed he may feel. The announcement came after The Barca No.7 stepped up his training in the last month in an effort to be ready, but after consultation with the Barcelona medical staff, he made his decision. This is a huge blow for the Spaniards, who are now not only without their top goalscorer of all time (51 goals in 82 appearances) but are likely to be without Carlos Puyol as well, who has a niggling knee injury.
Spain National Team CoachVincente Del Bosque will announce his squad this Sunday 27/05/2012… (by which time Barca will have won the Copa del Rey.)
